National Grilling Month Pack: 4 Courses of Recipes & Wine Pairings!

July is National Grilling Month!  To help you make the most of your backyard barbecue, we’ve curated a 4-course meal plan with grilling recipes paired with four Sunstone wines. Enjoy these recipes on the grill at your next outdoor gathering with friends and family.

All of these wines are available for purchase individually, but you can save 35% by buying all 4 together for just $99.  Enjoy!

FIRST COURSE

GRILLED EGGPLANT PARMESAN

Paired With: SUNSTONE 2019 SOLEIL ROUGE

It is rare for us to recommend a red wine with the first course of a meal, but our Soleil Rouge is made primarily from the Italian varietal Sangiovese, which is medium-bodied and not too “big”.  While grilled eggplant parmesan may sound too heavy to start a meal with, this recipe from MarthaStewart.com is a light, summery take on the classic Italian dish.  Dishes with tomatoes are a perfect pairing for Sangiovese, and the basil and black pepper seasonings in the dish perfectly complement those same notes in the wine. Mangia!

SECOND COURSE

GRILLED SHRIMP WITH FRUIT SALSA

Paired With: SUNSTONE 2020 SYRAH ROSÉ

Grilled shrimp can pair well with just about any kind of white or rosé.  But we found this recipe from TasteofHome.com that really nails the match with our Syrah Rosé.  This recipe includes a fresh-made fruit salsa.  The apples and citrus in the salsa (lime, orange) are a perfect complement to the notes of citrus, cherries, apples and watermelon in the wine.  Both the dish and the wine will be light and refreshing on a warm summer evening!

THIRD COURSE

THE SUNSTONE SMASH BURGER

Paired With: SUNSTONE 2019 SYRAH, SYV

An oldie, but goodie- The Sunstone Smash Burger.  We created this recipe from scratch a couple years ago and it continues to delight.  While it was created for making in a skillet, you can easily do it on the grill as well.  Burgers can pair well with many different reds, but we are partial to pairing this one with our Syrahs.  Our just released SYV Syrah has peppery and spicy notes that match well with the seasoning in the burger, while the oak and smoky notes in the wine match the grilled flavors.

FOURTH COURSE

GRILLED PEACHES WITH GINGER A LA MODE

Paired With: SUNSTONE 2020 VIOGNIER, SBC

Grilled fruit with ice cream is always a great way to end a meal.  You could easily do this same recipe from TheWimpyVegetarian.com with apples or pears, but peaches are in season right now and readily available.  What makes this pairing click is not only the peach character in the wine but also the clove notes in the wine that complement the ginger in the recipe. The recipe calls for coconut ice cream, but feel free to substitute it with vanilla ice cream, which will match the vanilla notes in the Viognier. Enjoy!
